From the Greek word “KARKINOS“, in Bengali” KANKARA“(crab), the origin of the word ” CANCER” in English. In AYURVEDA, it is called “KARKATA ROG“. Cancer does not mean a single disease. It means many kinds and types of MALIGNANT NEOPLASM. Like most of other diseases caused by external germ, cancer is not like that. For some unknown reasons, cancer develops and grows through a special change (MALIGNANT change) within its own cells without following any rules (of MUTATION). Normal cells follow a set of rules of mutation but Cancer cells do not follow any rules of mutation/cell division. Strange notions of cell divisions occur in a happy and random way in case of cancer. Spreads in any part of the body can occur and can cause/develop similar tumor ie. Cancer and may kill the person. The existence of a “LIFE” is as old as Cancer. Descriptions of cancer like disease and it’s treatments is also found in the Atharva Veda from 2200 BC. Existence of cancer is also found in the bones of “MUMMY of PHARAOH” within 500 BC. Physician Hippocratic also found the presence of cancer amongst his patient on and about 430-377 BC. CHARAKA & SUSHRUTA respectively mention CANCER and a kind of treatment method in 8th and 6th centuries BC.
